Student Media
Hands-on experience
No theory. No abstracts. No laboratories. Just plain old, do-it-yourself practical application. When it comes to finding a career in the mass media, there’s no substitute hands-on experience and that’s what students get when they work at the five departments of Student Media at the University of Idaho.
- KUOI-FM, a free-form radio station that plays a diverse mix of music, airs news reports and does live remotes and debates.
- The Argonaut, the UI student newspaper, published twice weekly during the school year, which serves as a clearing house for information and opinion.
- Argonaut Advertising, selling and designing display advertising for the Argonaut and its special sections, as well as the yearbook.
- The Photo Bureau, a newly created department dedicated to helping train the photojournalists of tomorrow.
Through these media outlets, more than 125 UI students get opportunities to put their classroom work into action, enhancing the educational experience in the following areas:
- Journalism
- Graphic design
- Broadcasting
- Photography
- Sales
- Marketing and promotion
- Web design
- Management
- Advertising
- Layout and production
- Electronic engineering
The five departments of Student Media also serve as a focal point for student life on the UI campus by providing:
- Information about campus events and activities.
- News of general interest about the campus, region, nation and world.
- Important forums for the exchange of ideas and opinions.
- An outlet for student expression and the exercise of free-speech rights.
