The Student Media Board meeting was called to order at
approximately 5:35pm on March 23rd
in the Aurora Room
of the Idaho Commons. Chairman Wilson
entertained a motion from Pool to vote on the meeting minutes of March 9, 2004. The minutes were passed unanimously by an 8-0
vote.
The board began by setting up the format for that nights
media manager interviews. It was decided that the applicants would be asked two
sets of questions, one set that all interviewees were asked and a second list
specifically geared toward their particular position. The questions would be
asked by members of the board in order of their
seating. The applicant would then be asked any additional questions board
members might have. Lastly, the applicant would have an opportunity to ask the
board any questions that they might have. The board was given a copy of the
interview schedule as well as the applications and any additional application
materials. After the interviews for each department were completed, the board
would then discuss any references and come to a decision.
Before bringing in applicants, the board heard department
reports.
ARGONAUT REPORT:
Due to some issues concerning press availability at ASUI
meetings, Passey said the Argonaut was researching open meeting laws currently
and discussing its findings with ASUI leadership.
PHOTO BUREAU:
Quint said the bureau is still getting organized but doing
well so far.
GEM OF THE MOUNTAINS:
Bacon reported the Gem was hard at work on gathering living
group information, which is one of the more difficult and time-consuming
sections of the book.
ARGONAUT ADVERTISING:
Bottari said members of the ad staff, as well as Michele
Kimberling and Student Media financial technician Marlene Wilson, would be
attending the CNBAM conference in Seattle
later this week. The staff has already prepared the paper as it is rather large
paper with the Vandal Friday special section.
She said the revenue this year is higher than she had previously thought, which is great.
KUOI-FM:
Jeff Kimberling said that
Long could not attend due to other work commitments, but he had reviewed the
department applicants with her and she had given him her feedback.
The board then conducted interviews with the 10 applicants.
The order of interviews were as follows:
n
Sarah Quint, Photo Bureau
n
Matt Butcher, Argonaut Advertising
n
Chris Harris, KUOI station manager
n
James Yeary, KUOI station manager
n
Chris Kornelis, Gem Magazine editor
n
Laura Hixon, Gem Magazine editor
n
Errin Reese, Gem Magazine editor, conducted via
speaker phone to New York
n
Cady Allred, Argonaut editor
n
Betsy Dalessio, Argonaut editor
n
Abbey Lostrom, Argonaut editor
The interviews lasted until approximately 9:45 p.m. At the end of the evening, the board
had selected the following students to run the various departments of Student
Media:
n
Sarah Quint, Photo Bureau
n
Matt Butcher, Argonaut Advertising
n
James Yeary, KUOI-FM
n
Chris Kornelis, Gem Magazine
n
Abbey Lostrom, Argonaut
When selections were done, Beesley alerted board members to
the possibility that they might be called for a special session next week to
deal with the budget. The word from Student Services administration is that the
various departments, including Student Media, should be prepared to integrate a
5 percent holdback into their 2004-05 budgets. That had not been known at the
time the draft budgets were drawn up and shared with the board at its March 9
meeting. Beesley said Assistant Director of Student Services Steve Janowiak
would be contacting Riley about the need for such a special meeting and that he
would then pass along the meetings time, date and place to the rest of the
board.
The board then adjourned at approximately 10 p.m.
Respectfully submitted by Stacy Carroll,
Student Media administrative assistant, March 25, 2004
