Crabtree.
Chairman Wilson called the meeting to order at approximately
5:03 p.m. in the Silver Room of the
Student Union Building. Wilson
began by entertaining a motion to approve the minutes, seconded and the minutes
where approved unanimously. Wilson
then called for department reports.
ARGONAUT ADVERTISING:
Bottari said Argonaut Advertising would be running a Gift Guide and that it
was looking very good. She also said that the advertising staff is interested
in buying fleece jackets with the Argonaut Advertising logo. They found that by
ordering more quantity the price will go down.
Bottari asked if any of the other Student Media departments would be
interested in joining the order. She said that if they ordered 40 jackets, each
would be $37 but that the price would vary with quantity and number of logos.
Passey said Managing Editor Joy Barbour had expressed interest in doing the
same thing and asked Bottari to discuss it with her.
ARGONAUT: Passey
said the Argonaut may be losing Katie Botkin, its Arts and Entertainment
editor. He said if that happens they would be looking for a replacement as well
as a new columnist, since Annette Henke also would be leaving. Passey said if
the board knew of any interested students to let him know, although he would
most likely promote a current staff person. He added he would like a columnist
who focuses on local events preferably and said the other columnist, Josh
Studor, would return next semester.
GEM: Bacon said
the first deadline for the yearbook is the Tuesday of finals week the cover
and endsheets will be due. She added the staff had some great cover ideas.
KUOI: Long
announced spring DJ applications went out today and will be due back on Jan.
21. She added KUOI staff, DJs, and
listeners recently ran an impromptu fund-raiser for Sojourners Alliance and
raised $190.69, which was sent out to them earlier that day.
GEM COMMITTEE: Pool
said the committee did not meet but that Beesley brought BYU-Idahos 2003 DVD
for the board to view. Beesley said he had recently visited with Pat Harts
Publication Editing Class and viewed their projects related to the GEM format
options. He said he was very impressed with their ideas. He added copies of
their projects may be available next week. Beesley opened up the discussion by
saying all options are viable but that perhaps a combination could also be
considered. He said the budget is the biggest immediate issue. For example, the
GEM currently works with at budget of $33,000 and BYU-Idahos DVD worked with a
budget of $50,000. The issue of appropriate equipment was raised and it was
stated that the School of Journalism
and Mass Media did in fact have the equipment but it is already being heavily
used by students. It would take a close alliance between Student Media and JAMM
to make sharing the equipment work, and JAMM instructors Rosenwinkel and Glenn
Mosley could assist in this. Bacon said the GEM staff had met and discussed the
different format options and that they had unanimously favored the magazine format.
Beesley then discussed some of the details of producing a magazine. The
printing would be fairly expensive unless they where able to set up a deal with
the local newspaper. The number of issues per year will also effect
the cost of printing. Advertising is an option that may offset costs. Jeff
Olson in University Communications may have some insight to give as he is in
charge of the alumni magazine. Discussion turned to different surveys that had
been taken but no one was certain of the results. Beesley said that regardless
of which format is chosen, marketing and promotions will be necessary.
PHOTO BUREAU: Beesley
said several administrative staff members would be meeting regarding Photo
Bureau budgeting on Thursday. He said the bureau should be set and ready to
hire when students return from winter break, so far the board has gotten two
applicants for the photo bureau manager position.
Joslin motioned to adjourn, Heady seconded and the motion
passed unanimously. The Student Media Board adjourned at approximately 6:15 p.m.
