Media Board Minutes Archive 20031007
Minutes of Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2003
Members present: Chairman
Riley Wilson; community representative John Pool; KUOI Station Manager Sarah
Long; KUOI adviser Jeff Kimberling; Argonaut Advertising/photo adviser Michele
Kimberling; Gem editor Jessi Bacon; Argonaut Advertising director Abigail
Bottari; Argonaut editor Brian Passey; Student Bar Association representative
Andrea Schiers; Argonaut/Gem adviser Brian Beesley.
Also in attendance: Board
applicants Kate Heady and Diana Crabtree; KUOI Music Director James Yeary;
Steve Janowiak, assistant director of student activities.
Meeting was adjourned at 5:10
p.m. in the Chiefs Room of the Student Union Building. Wilson
began by introducing Heady and Crabtree and then called for department reports.
Argonaut: Passey
said Managing Editor Joy Barbour and Copy Editor Jake Alger had taken over the
duties of the departed copy desk chief and that things were going OK. There are
still some technical problems cropping up, related to the upgrade to Mac OSX,
and Passey said he hopes they can be worked out before Barbour leaves at the
semester break.
Arg Advertising: Bottari
reported that ad sales were going well.
KUOI: Long
introduced the board to the KUOI music director, James Yeary, adding that they
brought with them a proposal for the board to fund Yearys trip to New
York City for the CMJ Music Marathon. Discussion of
the proposal was tabled until later in the meeting.
Gem: Bacon said
things were going well at the yearbook and she had received a kit from our new
publisher, Friesens of Manitoba, Canada.
They had also notified her of the Gems deadlines for this year. She said her
two-person promotions staff had begun work on getting the Gem name out on
campus and things were going really well.
Wilson asked
Pool to give a report from the Gem subcommittee meeting, held two weeks
earlier. Pool said panel members discussed the current status of the book, ways
to get it back on firmer financial footing in the short term, and the long-term
future of the book in terms of format. Committee member Beesley said one of the
discussions involved the general mission of Student Media to give students
experience in the field and how that might relate to changing the yearbook to a
magazine format; it would give student journalists the opportunity to get
experience they could apply in the real world, as opposed to the limited
opportunities presented by a traditional yearbook. Beesley also said he had
contacted advisers or instructors at between 10 and 12 similar-sized universities
in the Northwest in inquire about their schools yearbooks. He found that the
only one that still puts out a yearbook is Washington
State University;
all the others had abandoned their annuals sometime in the 1980s or early 90s.
Pool said the committee would meet again the following Tuesday at 4:30 at the Campus
Christian Center.
Wilson than
opened a discussion of the two applicants. Both were asked about their standing
in school, and Heady said she would be graduating in December, while Crabtree
said she was senior planning to graduate in May. Beesley inquired whether
either worked in a paid capacity for a Student Media department, and both said
no. Wilson asked if the board had a
quorum to vote on the applicants, noting that faculty rep Hans Rosenwinkel,
ASUI rep Carrie Joslin and Graduate Student Association rep Jowi McMillan were
not present. Beesley said McMillan had notified him the previous week that
McMillan would no longer be able to serve on the board due to a scheduling
conflict with its new Tuesday evening meeting times. McMillan told Beesley he
would try to find a replacement from the GSA, but the absence of a GSA rep at
this meeting meant there was a vacancy on the board that would allow for the
four votes present to be a quorum. Bottair then moved to vote on the
applicants, which Passey seconding the motion. The board voted 4-0 to accept
both Heady and Crabtree onto the board.
Wilson checked
to see if members had received copies of the previous meetings minutes, and
then said he would entertain a motion to amend or adopt the minutes. Passey
moved to adopt the minutes of the last meeting, with Bottari seconding it. The
board voted 6-0 to adopt the motion.
Long then made her aforementioned proposal * to ask the
board for money to send Yeary to New York City.
She said this was an important gathering of the countrys independent music
labels and was vital to ensuring that KUOI continues to receive free music.
Jeff Kimberling said that KUOI ordinarily builds the cost of this trip into its
budget proposal, but last spring they needed to reduce its travel budget in
order to meet the budget; registration cost for CMJ was still there, but the
travel cost which Long and Yeary estimated at $877 was not available.
Janowiak told the board that he had previously given his impassioned
students-need-to-go-to-these-kinds-of-conferences speech at an earlier board
meeting, and said this was the same scenario. Wilson
said he advocates spending the money this way; Pool reiterated that its a
valuable experience for students who will be looked to in the future to apply
the things they learn in management roles at Student Media. Bottari moved to
give KUOI $877 from Student Media carryover to attend the conference; Pool
second the motion. The vote was 6-0 in favor.
Janowiak distributed copies of the Student Media logo that
he had asked ASUI graphic intern Nomusa Ndebele to work up. Beesley also
circulated copies of the logo he had drawn up. Bottari said she had asked her
Arg Advertising graphic designers to come up with logo ideas, but none had yet
been produced. Board discussed the various designs, but a vote on accepting any
of them was tabled until the next meeting.
Pool brought up the idea of amending SMB bylaws to define
voting regulations. He suggested that a quorum at the beginning of a meeting
should be regarded as remaining quorum throughout the meeting, regardless of
any voting member who may leave before adjournment. Wilson
tabled the idea until the next meeting, asking Pool to remind him of the matter
via email before the next meeting.
Bottari made a motion to adjourn at approximately 5:32 p.m.; Passey seconded, and the motion
passed 6-0.
